physical-modelling synthesizer

Modelonia is a novel physical-modelling synthesizer which uses a hybrid of two distinct "model" system : a plucked-string model, and a blown-bore (horn type) model. Each model may be used simultaneously, and the signal path allows cross-modulation between the two for more interesting and complex tones.

Modelonia is not simply an acoustic instrument emulation. Advanced physical modeling technology has been used to enable "live" and expressive new sounds and harmonic textures. Modelonia has therefore been designed to be the first compact multi-purpose virtual sythesizer that uses physical-modelling techniques as the only sound source. It is therefore not enhanced by cheap multi-effects or sweepable filters (VFC in the Subctractive tradition). Modelonia sound shaping abilities rely solely on physical-modelling.

The demo version has the following limitations: no preset save functionality, a periodic soft noise output, and higher CPU usage than the full version. Modelonia is skinnable and comes with two different skins.

Using Modelonia

Modelonia is a PC VST instrument plugin (VSTi), which should be usable in most sequencers with VSTi support. Modelonia is very straighforward to use, and even if the principles of physical modelling are unfamiliar to you, its architecture is actually fairly simple even compared to basic subtractive synthesisers. All the controls are visible, and they are logically grouped according to the various 'blocks' which make up the structure of the sound-generation engine.

Using Presets

Modelonia uses the standardised preset system common to most VST plugins. This means that preset handling is actually handled by the sequencer/host software. Modelonia comes with a bank of 128 default presets.

The Sound Wizard

The Sound Wizard provides convenient 'starting templates' for specific common types of sound you might want to create. There are ten, Basic Plucked, Basic Flute, Basic Pad, Basic Horn and others. However you can create your own Templates.

Tweaking presets

The best way to become familiar with programming your own sounds on a synthesiser is to 'tweak' existing presets. With the inclusion of the Sound Wizard, Modelonia provides an easy route to get started creating and customising several different families of sounds.

System Requirements

Any actual PC and a VSTi host sequencer application.
